AEON Day: Feeding Hong Kong - Food Recycling Volunteer Activity

On Jan's AEON Day, AEON volunteer team joined Feeding Hong Kong to experience the food recycling work. The mission of Feeding Hong Kong is to fight hunger and reduce the amount of quality food going to the landfills in Hong Kong. They do this by collecting surplus stock from food companies, sort and store it, then redistribute it to charities who feed those in need. They also raise awareness about food waste, hunger and food banking.

Before the field work began, Feeding Hong Kong explained how severe the situation of food wastage is in Hong Kong. Each day, we throw away 3,600 tonnes of food. Meanwhile, 1 in 5 people in Hong Kong live in poverty. Food recycling is one of the means to tackle the problem. The volunteers then helped to screen out unsuitable ones from the foods collected and packed them for distribution. Nearly 3,000 kgs of surplus food were sorted and packed finally. The volunteers found the experience very meaningful as it helps to build a community that promotes the concept of mutual assistance along with environmental protection.
