AEON Day: The Conservancy Association "Food Recycling Resource Centre" Food Recycling Volunteer Activity

Since 2013, AEON has been supporting the Food Resources Recycling Centre (FRRC) in Lei Muk Shue Estate, a food recycling project run by The Conservancy Association, by donating good quality prepackaged products, to raise the awareness of treasuring food and making good use of resources, as well as help families in need. As of May 2017, FRRC has recycled 152 tonnes of leftover food, including 22.5 tonnes from AEON, and over 60 thousand person-times have been benefited.

On June's AEON Day, AEON volunteer team joined FRRC to experience the food recycling work. Before the field work began, FRRC explained how severe the situation of food wastage in Hong Kong - food waste equivalent to the weight of about 230 double-decker buses is being disposed every day, and food recycling is one of the means to tackle the problem. The volunteers then went to nearby Chinese restaurant and wet market to collect left-over dim-sum, vegetables, fruits and bread, weighing nearly 60kg altogether. Back to the Centre, they helped to screen out unsuitable ones before distributing the foods collected, together with snacks and grocery items donated by AEON and other organisations, to 23 registered families. The volunteers found the experience very meaningful as it helps to build a community that promotes the concepts of mutual assistance along with environmental protection.
