World Environmental Day – Coastal Cleanup

AEON Coastal Watch volunteer team joined the cross-border coastal clean-up action, co-organised by World Wide Fund Hong Kong and other NGOs in Mainland China and Macau, on the World Environmental Day on 5th June 2016.

AEON volunteer team conducted clean-up action at Nim Shue Wan on Lantau Island, one of the 16 marine litter black spots involved in this event. They picked up and recorded the data of various marine litter, from plastic debris to freezer door, scattered on the beach, and within an hour, have collected 10 big bags of marine litter, while plastic items accounted for the highest proportion. According to the results announced by the organiser, the event in Hong Kong alone has collected nearly 200 bags or over 1.8 tonnes of marine litters. All participants have had a first-hand experience of how serious the problem with marine litter is.

At the end of the activity, the volunteers used the marine litter collected to spell out “NIM SHUE WAN” and took its picture. Together with similar photos taken at all other clean-up sites, it is hoped to show the extent of the marine litter problem as well as our determination to combat it.
