AEON Kumamoto Banpeiyu Fair Opening Ceremony

KUMAMON, the mascot of Kumamoto Prefecture, visited AEON Kornhill Store the second time in two months for the AEON Kumamoto Banpeiyu Fair opening ceremony held on 30 January to promote his hometown's signature fruit.

The ceremony was officiated by guests including Mr. Hideki Nishiyama, Chief Director of Kumamoto Prefectural Government Hong Kong Representative Office, and Ms. Christine Chan, Managing Director of AEON Stores (Hong Hong) Co., Limited.

When KUMAMON appeared on stage with a shopping-cart-full of Banpeiyu, the audience welcomed him with screams of excitement. Banpeiyu is the world's largest kind of citrus fruit. It is famous for the excellent balanced flavour between sweet and sour. Its spherical shape and golden yellow skin make it a better substitute for tangerines or pomelos which are commonly used as decorations during Chinese New Year.

KUMAMON also took the opportunity to celebrate Chinese New Year, about one week after the ceremony, with his fans by writing a "fai chun" with Chinese characters meaning great luck. This promotion event has brought to customers in Hong Kong one of Kumamoto's most distinct food as well as other fresh ingredients and grocery goods from the prefecture.
