AEON Day: T-Park Visit

On 11th of June, AEON has organised a visit to T-Park, a futuristic waste treatment facility which is located at Tuen Mun. With its advanced technologies and highly-developed facilities, the place also serves as a wonderful leisure and educational environment for citizens to learn and experience the concept of converting "waste-to-energy".

Through the detailed explanation by the tour guide, the participants have an understanding on the whole process of sludge treatment. Sludge is a by-product of sewage treatment. A huge amount of sludge, approximately 1,200 tonnes, was being produced daily in Hong Kong. Disposal of sludge had brought great pressure on landfills over the years; therefore, a sustainable solution for waste management is very crucial. The facilities in T-Park help turn the sludge into ash by undergoing many procedures and finally incineration. The ash does not contain any greenhouse gases. Its size has also been reduced by 90%; therefore, it can greatly reduce the pressure on landfills. During the process of incineration, electricity is generated for the use by the whole park and the remaining electricity can be exported to the electricity net. For the sewage produced during the sludge treatment, it turns to "reclaimed water" after a process of treatment and is reused in the park.

During the visit, the participants have not merely had understood the whole process of sludge treatment, but also have had a rewarding learning experience in understanding the impact of human's behaviours to the environment and the importance of resource recycling and environment protection.
